چکیده

We define a monad on the category of complete metric spaces with short maps, which assigns to each space the space of Radon probability measures on it with finite first moment, equipped with the Kantorovich–Wasserstein distance. It is analogous to the Giry monad on the category of Polish spaces, and it extends a construction due to van Breugel for compact and for 1bounded complete metric spaces. We prove that this Kantorovich monad arises from a colimit construction on finite powers, which formalizes the intuition that probability measures are limits of finite samples. The proof relies on a new criterion for when an ordinary left Kan extension of lax monoidal functors is a monoidal Kan extension. This colimit characterization allows for the development of integration theory and other things, such as the treatment of measures on spaces of measures, completely without measure theory. We also show that the category of algebras of the Kantorovich monad is equivalent to the category of closed convex subsets of Banach spaces with short affine maps as the morphisms.

Theories

We consider the equivalence of Lawvere theories and finitary monads on Set from the perspective of Endf (Set)-enriched category theory, where Endf (Set) is the category of finitary endofunctors of Set. We identify finitary monads with one-object Endf (Set)-categories, and ordinary categories admitting finite powers (i.e., n-fold products of each object with itself) with Endf (Set)-categories ad...

Characterizing the Eilenberg-Moore Algebras for a Monad of Stochastic Relations

We investigate the category of Eilenberg-Moore algebras for the Giry monad associated with stochastic relations over Polish spaces with continuous maps as morphisms. The algebras are characterized through convex partitions of the space of all probability measures. Examples are investigated, and it is shown that finite spaces usually do not have algebras at all.

Coalgebraic Trace Semantics for Probabilistic Transition Systems Based on Measure Theory

Coalgebras in a Kleisli category yield a generic definition of trace semantics for various types of labelled transition systems. In this paper we apply this generic theory to generative probabilistic transition systems, short PTS, with arbitrary (possibly uncountable) state spaces. We consider the sub-probability monad and the probability monad (Giry monad) on the category of measurable spaces ...

Some connections between powers of conjugacy classes and degrees of irreducible characters in solvable groups

‎Let $G$ be a finite group‎. ‎We say that the derived covering number of $G$ is finite if and only if there exists a positive integer $n$ such that $C^n=G'$ for all non-central conjugacy classes $C$ of $G$‎. ‎In this paper we characterize solvable groups $G$ in which the derived covering number is finite‎.‎

Coalgebraic Infinite Traces and Kleisli Simulations

Kleisli simulation is a categorical notion introduced by Hasuo to verify finite trace inclusion. They allow us to give definitions of forward and backward simulation for various types of systems. A generic categorical theory behind Kleisli simulation has been developed and it guarantees the soundness of those simulations wrt. finite trace semantics. Moreover, those simulations can be aided by f...
